Misenheimer, N.C. – NGU men’s tennis improved its conference record on Saturday afternoon with a dramatic 5-4 win over Pfeiffer University.
The Falcons took a 2-1 lead after doubles play as NGU’s Edmundo Torres and Austin Schlarb earned the only victory with an 8-6 win. De La Torre and Dion Nijboer lost 8-4 while Sjors van Eck and William Greaves fell 8-3.
The Crusaders got an early singles win from van Eck who earned a 6-4/4-3 victory to even the score at 2-2. The Falcons then inched one win closer to the match win, downing NGU’s Jose Gomez 6-1/64.
NGU faced a 4-2 deficit a game later as the Falcons earned a 6-3/6-4 win over Edmundo Torres in the five spot. North Greenville was down, but definitely not out. The Crusader rallied late, securing the final three wins of the night. Dion Nijboer got things rolling with a pair of 6-4 victories in the four spot to cut the hole down to one match.
The Crusaders then got a big win from Austin Schlarb in the six hole to even the score at 4-4. Schlarb won his singles match 6-4/ 7-5 to put the game winning point in the hands of Alejandro de La Torre. Torre came through in a big way, downing his counter part 7-6/6-2/4-3 in the two slot to earn North Greenville the victory.
The Crusaders improved to 6-12 overall and 4-6 in league play. NGU will take on Lander University at 2pm in Greenwood, South Carolina on April 4th.
