Winless doubles portion costs NGU in loss to King

Bristol, TN – North Greenville men’s tennis suffered a Conference Carolinas loss on Friday afternoon, falling to King University in a closely fought 5-4 loss.

The Crusaders had to pull through in singles play after being swept in the doubles segment. The Tornado took a 3-0 lead over the Crusaders after a pair of 8-7 wins with an 8-4 win in the first position. Both of the 8-7 losses went into a tiebreaker.

The Crusaders picked up four points in the singles portion of Friday’s match with wins in the first, fourth, fifth, and sixth positions. Sjors van Eck dropped an early set but bounced back with 6-3 and 6-4 victories to win the point. Dion Nijbor also bounced back from his doubles defeat with a quick 6-2/6-4 victory.

North Greenville also got convincing wins from William Greaves and Edmundo Torres who won 6-3/6-2 and 6-4/6-3. King locked the conference victory by winning the second and third spots as Alejandro de la Torre fell 6-4/7-6 and Jose Gomez lost 6-4/7-5.

North Greenville fell to 4-11 on the season and 2-5 in league play. The Crusaders will take on Lees-McRae University on Saturday afternoon.
