Tigerville, S.C. – The 2017 season got off to a rocky start for NGU men’s tennis on Thursday as they fell to Newberry College 8-1 in non-conference action.
North Greenville’s only win of the day came in singles play as Dion Nijboer downed his Wolves counterpart 6-3/7-5. The Wolves swept through doubles play as The Crusaders fell by scores of 4-8, 3-8, and 5-8.
NGU looked to rebound in the singles portion of Thursday’s match, but Newberry proved too much, taking the remaining five solo sets. Sjors van Eck lost his singles play 3-6/1-6 while Alejandro de la Torre fell 1-6/7-5/7-10. Jose Gomez got off to a solid start taking a 6-4 decision to open the match but fell 0-6/2-6 in the final two.
William Greaves also earned a set one win with a 7-5 decision but struggled to close out the match, losing 4-6/4-6. Edmundo Torres also fell in his singles match as he dropped a pair of 4-6/4-6 decisions.
The Crusaders will travel to Furman University on Saturday to take on the Paladins at 11am.
