NGU men tied for league lead after win over Belmont Abbey

Tigerville, S.C. – North Greenville men’s tennis handed Belmont Abbey its fifth league loss of the season on Saturday, using a 5-4 decision to improve to 4-0 in Conference Carolinas play.

The Crusaders fell behind early as Abbey jumped out to a 2-1 lead following doubles play. Sjors van Eck and Edmundo Torres claimed North Greenville’s only tandem win, using an 8-5 victory to cut the BAC lead in half.

Van Eck picked up his fourth win of the week in singles play with a 6-1/6-1 victory that evened the overall score at two. Abbey would tack on two wins in singles play in the second and fifth positions but the home standing Crusaders pulled three of the final five games to earn the win.

Jose Gomez tied the score at 3-3 with a 6-2/1-6/6-2 win while Alejandro de la Torre gave NGU a 4-3 edge with a 6-4/6-3 win of his own. Edmundo Torres’ second win of the day would be the deciding victory as his 6-2/7-6 victory secured the victory for the Crusaders.

North Greenville improved to 6-5 overall after Saturday’s win. The Crusaders will travel to Mount Olive to take on the Trojans at 2pm on April 8th.
