Central, S.C.—The North Greenville men's and women's tennis teams fell one win short of a sweep on Tuesday night as both teams took an 8-1 win over the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University.
The NGU men suffered their only loss of the day in doubles play as the Warriors took the second game of the day. Jose Gomez and Sergio Araujo gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead with an 8-2 win while Marcelo Yshikawa and and Santiago Robles pug NGU back on top 2-1.
The Crusaders swept through singles play. SJors van Eck recovered from a loss in doubles with a 6-3/0-6/6-1 win while Filho followed up with a 6-4/7-5 win to give NGU a 4-1 lead. Jose Gomez won the match clincher with a 6-2/6-3 win in the third singles slot.
NGU got two more wins from Robles and Alejandro de la Torre while Yshikawa capped the day with a 6-2/6-0 win in the final set. The Crusaders stayed perfect in league play after Tuesday's win, improving to 6-0.
The NGU women swept through doubles play, with wins of 8-5 and 8-2. The team of Rebecca Beacham and Maria Vargas put NGU 1-0 early in the day while Ann Hayden Huxford and Hartley Smith earned the 2-0 lead for NGU. The Crusaders moved to 3-0 after a forfeit in the third doubles spot.
The Warriors cut the lead to 3-1 with a win in the first singles set, but the Crusaders quickly recovered. Maria Vargas would score a 6-1/6-1 win to extend the lead to 4-1 while Camille Duhan's 6-0/6-1 win would clinch NGU's fifth Conference Carolinas win. Christina Keissling also won her match 6-1/6-0 while NGU wrapped up the day with two forfeits to earn the 8-1 victory.
Both the men and women will take on USC Aiken tomorrow afternoon in Tigerville at the Vance Tennis Complex at 2:30pm.
