Tigerville, S.C.—The North Greenville men’s tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule on Tuesday afternoon, falling 6-3 to Mars Hill University of the South Atlantic Conference.
The Crusaders and Lions made battle in the brand new Vance Tennis Center, which was officially christened with its first NCAA match today. NGU Jumped out to an early lead over the Lions taking a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of double’s play. Sjors van Eck and Marcello Yshikawa put NGU on the board with a 9-8 win in the opening game, while Jose Gomez and Alejandro de la Torre earned the second win of the day with an 8-4 doubles victory.
Mars Hill would dominate the singles games however, as the Crusaders were able to muster just one win in the head to head. Sjors van Eck earned credit for NGU’s only singles victory with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-5, three set win over Euquerio Guerrero of MHU. Jose Gomez would fall in his singles game 6-4, 6-3, while Torre fell 6-4, 6-1. The Lions would earn the win after picking up the next two singles games, beating Juan Vargas 6-3, 6-2 and Santiago Robles 6-3, 6-3. Marcelo Yshikawa also fell in his singles match 6-2, 6-4, and 6-2.
The Crusaders will return to the court in February 2015 to begin their run at a Conference Carolinas championship. NGU will open the 2015 season on February 17th against Wofford College.
