Sumter, S.C.—The 2014 record breaking men’s season came to an end for the North Greenville men’s tennis team, as the Crusaders fell to Barton College in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament 5-2.
The Crusaders were able to muster just one win in the doubles portion of Friday’s game, as Sergio Araujo Filho and Santiago Robles earned an 8-3 win in the second position. Rafael Lenz Gonzalez and Jose Gomez fell 8-5 while Sjors van Eck and Marcelo Yshikawa fell in the third spot 8-5.
The Crusaders trailed 2-1 heading into singles play, but the deficit quickly grew to 4-1 after the first two singles games as Jose Gomez fell 6-2/6-3 and Rafael Lenz Gonzalez fell 6-1/6-4. NGU made up some ground and cut the Bulldog lead to 4-2 with a 6-1/6-3 win from Sergio Araujo Filho. The Crusaders looked to be in control late, as Sjors van Eck and Santiago Robles both led their singles matches, but the two would not finish their frames as Barton wrapped up the round one win with a 6-1/6-4 win over Jonathan Stanga, making the final score 5-2.
The Crusaders finished the 2014 season with a 5-3 mark in Conference play, their best since joining the league in 2011. North Greenville finished 9-9 overall.
