CRUSADERS FALL TO ERSKINE IN FINAL MATCH OF REGULAR SEASON
Due West, S.C.—The North Geenville men’s tennis team fell to 9-8 overall and 5-3 in Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday night, falling to the Flying Fleet of Erskine College 5-4, in the final league match of the season.
The Crusaders gained an early advantage taking two of three doubles games. NGU won the second and third doubles positions, as Sergio Araujo Filho and Santiago Robles took an 8-4 decision, while Sjors van Eck and Marcelo Yshikawa won their doubles game 8-6. Erskines only win in pairs came in the first doubles game as Jose Gomez and Rafael Lenz dropped an 8-4 decision.
The Crusaders would not fair as well in singles play however, as the Fleet won four of the six singles contests. NGU’s only two wins came from Sergio Araujo and Santiago Robles who won 6-4/6-1 and 6-3/6-4. Jose Gomez fell in his singles set 6-3/6-1 while Rafael Lenz fell in the second spot 6-1/6-4. Sjors van Eck and Jonathan Stanga also fell 6-2/6-3 and 6-2/6-0.
A win against the Fleet would have locked up a second seed for the Crusaders, who will now likely finish the season in third place. The Crusaders are now finished with the 2014 regular season, and will gear up for the Conference Carolinas tournament scheduled to take place on April 25-27 in Sumter, South Carolina.
