Mount Olive, N.C.—The North Greenville women’s team fell to #30 Mount Olive on Friday afternoon, 6-3, handing NGU its first Conference Carolinas loss of the 2014 season. NGU now sits at 2-1 on the season in league play, and 3-7 overall.
The Trojans jumped on NGU quickly, taking three wins in the doubles portion of Friday’s match. The Crusaders fell to their Mount Olive counter parts with a pair of 8-4 losses, and an 8-0 defeat. It was the first time in two conference games the Crusaders failed to earn at least one point in doubles competition.
The Trojans locked up the conference win after taking the first two singles sets. Jose Daniel Gomez Castillo fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in the #1 singles position, followed by a 6-0, 6-0 Juan Vargas to give Mount Olive a 5-0 lead. The Crusaders would take three of the last four singles frames, Rafael Lenz Gonzalez (6-1, 6-2), and Sjors van Eck (6-4, 1-0) got the Crusaders on the scoreboard with consecutive wins. Mount Olive would win the #5 singles as NGU’s Sergio Araujo Filho fell to Stanley Roffe. The Crusaders would end the day on a high note, winning the final game of the day as Andres Santiago Robles Camacho picked up a 3-6, 6-3, 12-10 win over Lautaro Vazquez.
North Greenville will spend the night in North Carolina and head to Barton College on Saturday for a fourth straight conference match. The Crusaders and Bulldogs will start at 1pm in Wilson, North Carolina.
