CRUSADERS EARN FIRST CONFERENCE WIN OF 2014
Greer, S.C.—The North Greenville men’s tennis team won its second match of the week on Saturday afternoon, downing the Pfeiffer Falcons 6-3, improving the Crusaders to 2-6 on the season, but 1-0 in Conference Carolinas play.
Pfeiffer took a quick 2-0 lead after NGU dropped the first two singles sets 6-4, 6-2, and 6-1, 6-2, but the Crusaders quickly rebounded. Rafael Lenz Gonzalez got the Crusaders into the win column, earning 7-5, 6-1 win over Pfeiffer’s Sebastian Wernecke. Sjors van Eck evened the tally at 2-2 with his 6-1, 6-0 decision over Stephen Miller, and Sergio Araujo Filho gave NGU the lead with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 victory. Andres Santiago Robles Camacho’s 6-1, 6-2 win gave the Crusaders a 4-2 lead, and momentum heading into doubles competition.
The Crusaders also played solid in doubles taking two of three games from the Falcons. Rafael Lenz Gonzalez and Jose Daniel Gomez Castillo fell to their Pfeiffer counterparts 8-6, but the team of Sergio Araujo Filho and Andres Santiago Robles Camacho secured the win for NGU with an 8-6 win to give the Crusaders the overall 5-3 victory. Sjors van Eck and Marcelo Mikio Yshikawa would add the sixth win for good measure with an 8-4 decision.
The Crusaders will continue conference play on February 2th when King University travels to Greer for a 2pm match with North Greenville.
