Greer, S.C.—the North Greenville men’s tennis team opened the 2014 season with a challenge, hosting the Patriots of Francis Marion. The 17th ranked Patriots dropped the Crusaders to 0-1 on the season after taking a 6-1 win over NGU.
Sjors van Eck picked the only win for NGU, including both the men and women’s teams. Va Eck picked up a three point win over Eimon Heywood 6-2/2-6/6-3. Andres Santiago Robles Camacho also took his singles match to three sets to decide a winner, but Camacho came out on the short end of the 6-2/4-6/10-6 decision. Sergio Araujo Filho also put together a tough match, but dropped a 7-6/6-3 decision to Marius Wahlier.
The men also struggled in doubles competition, dropping all three sets. Van Eck and Marcelo Mikio Yshikawa put together the most competitive performance, but fell 8-4 in the end. NGU also lost doubles sets by scores of 8-3 and 8-2.
The Crusaders will be back in action on Saturday when they travel Wingate to take on the Bulldogs in North Carolina in an early afternoon faceoff.
