CRUSADERS STUMBLE IN FIRST MATCH OF 2013
Charlotte, N.C.—The Men’s and women’s tennis teams opened up the 2013 season on Friday afternoon taking on the Royals of Queens college. The third ranked royals upended the Crusaders 9-0 on the men’s side, while the second ranked women’s team defeated NGU’s women 6-3.
The Crusaders found themselves down quickly on the men’s side, after the Royals swept the doubles portion of the day to take a 3-0 lead. Juan Vargas and Sergio Araujo Filho were closest to a victory but fell 8-4 to their Royal counterparts. . Hugo Ciarrocchi and Guilherme Ferreira dropped their doubles contest 8-3 while. James Klempin and Jared Ainbinder lost 8-0.
The Royals proved too much for the Crusaders in singles matches as well, as all six were decided in just two sets. NGU lost by scores of 6-2/ 7-5, 6-3/7-5, 6-1/6-0, 6-1/6-3, 6-1/6-3, and 6-0/6-0. North Greenville fell to 0-1 on the season and 0-1 overall. North Greenville will look even its record on February 8th, when it travels to Mount Olive for the second of four straight road matches.
The North Greenville women faced a tough task in the Queens Royals who are ranked 50th overall in the nation, and 10th in the region. The Royals grabbed the upper hand in doubles matches, securing a 2-1 decision. North Greenville’s lone win came from Victoria Gomez and Rebecca Beacham who took care of business with an 8-3 decision.
The Crusaders had a bit more success in the singles pairings, picking up two wins over the talented Royals club. Rebecca Beacham picked up her second win of the day, defeating her opponent in two sets with scores of 6-4 and 6-3. Haley Hardwick secured her first win of the year, and NGU’s third of the day with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 three set decision. The Crusaders are now 0-1 overall and 0-1 in Conference Carolinas play. The women’s team will join the men’s team on February 8th when they travel to Mount Olive for its second conference match of 2013.
