Crusaders Drop Home Opener To Bearcats
Tigerville, SC - It was a tale of two halves as North Greenville dropped their home opener to the Bearcats of Lander University 3-0 on Wednesday night in Pepsi Stadium.
The Crusaders opted for a more defensive approach to the game and for 45 minutes it was successful as NGU kept the #12 team in the nation off of the score sheet. The midfield trio of Ara Zadoorian, Thales Wieczorek and Victor Labi dominated stretches of the game and the first half especially.
The defensive strength was epitomized by Junior Shomari Bridgewater’s earth shattering challenge in the second half negating a clear scoring chance for Lander. The Crusaders were unlucky to concede as a shot-cross from Eoin O’donovan in the 50th minute found its way into the back of the net.
The Crusaders were again unlucky in the 67th minute to concede a penalty that was converted by Steven Gonzales. Lander put the nail in the coffin in the 73rd minute as Elias Hatungimana converted his chance after a North Greenville turnover.
The Crusader’s offense let them down however, as winger Jonny Lind always looked the only Crusader to score. The Mercurial sophomore ran rampant on the left side registering three shots for the game two on goal.
North Greenville will be in action again in Due West, SC against conference for Erskine College on Sept. 13.
