Tigerville, SC – The North Greenville University men’s soccer team opened the 2012 season with a 1-0 victory of Toccoa Falls College on Thursday night in Pepsi Stadium.
The Crusaders wasted no time in scoring the season’s opening goal as senior Luis Mattei placed a strong shot into the back of the net on an assist from freshman Adam Turner in just the fifth minute of play.
North Greenville continued to fire at will on the Eagles’ defense, compiling 20 total shots while holding Toccoa Falls to just one shot in the game.
Senior goalkeeper Justen Braddock earned his first shutout and first win of the season after playing just the first half of the game. Freshman keeper Pablo Dongarra was given a chance to showcase his talent as he started and played the entire second half.
“I am excited to start the season off with a win,” said head coach Chad Gfeller. “While we really controlled the pace of the game, we have to learn how to close better. I look forward to seeing our guys do that as the season progresses.”
The Crusaders (1-0, 0-0 in Conference Carolinas) will have a chance to put together back-to-back wins as they get set to host Peach Belt Conference member Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday, September 1. Kick off in Pepsi Stadium is set to take place at 1 p.m.
