Tigerville, S.C. – After losing last week’s season opener to Montreat in overtme, the North Greenville men’s soccer team won its 2011 home opener, defeating Virginia Intermont 2-1 on Thursday night at Pepsi Stadium.
The Cobras struck first with an early goal in the 5th minute to build a 1-0 lead. However, after the quick goal, North Greenville controlled the game and cruised to the victory.
The Crusaders quickly answered the Virginia Intermont goal with a goal of their own in the 8th minute by Mark Sterr. Sterr, who scored his third goal of the season, received a through ball from Luis Mattei and beat the keeper to tie the game at one goal apiece.
North Greenville’s second and final goal came from the foot of freshman Paul Stuebs who received a cross and put the ball into the back of the net for the eventual game-winner. The goal was the first of Stuebs young career.
The game was controlled by the Crusaders on both sides of the field as the offense fired 16 shots at the Cobra defense with the North Greenville defense held Virginia Intermont to just four shots in the game.
Keeper Justen Braddock had a fairly easy night as he recorded two saves in the game.
“I was happy with our team’s response after the early goal,” said head coach Chad Gfeller. “And I was proud of the way the guys held strong late in the game.”
North Greenville (1-1) will begin its conference schedule on Saturday, Sept. 10 as they play host to Barton College. The game will be the Crusaders first Conference Carolinas match and is scheduled to begin a 6 p.m. in Tigerville.
