The 2010 soccer season began on Thursday night with the men’s soccer team taking on a talented Taccoa Falls squad in Pepsi Stadium. North Greenville capitalized on their speed advantage to defeat the Eagles 3-0 for the season’s first win.
The Crusaders got off to a hot start with a goal by junior midfielder Chandler Patterson in the 15th minute. Freshman forward Alex Redding assisted on the goal in his first collegiate game.
After goal number one, the first half was a back and forth game as the Crusaders did their best to control the pace and keep the lead in tact as they went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
The second half began just as the first half with another goal from Patterson on an assist from junior midfielder Jonathan Restrepo. The Taccoa Falls defense was unable to slow down the speedy Patterson as he finished the day with two goals on five shots.
The games third and final goal came in the closing minutes as freshman midfielder Ben Montry was fouled in the box setting up a penalty kick. Sophomore defender Ben Bosco stepped up and knocked in the penalty kick with ease, sealing the win for North Greenville.
“I am very excited to begin the season with a win,” said head coach Chad Gfeller. “All we need to do now is clean up some technical things and work hard in practice.”
The Crusaders next game will be on Saturday, Sept. 4 against Virginia Intermont College in Bristol Virginia at 4 p.m. The next home game for North Greenville will be Sept. 14 against USC-Aiken at 7 p.m.
