North Greenville University will once again light up the Dark Corner of South Carolina with the addition of new stadium lighting at the Pepsi Soccer Stadium.
The NGU soccer program embarked on a project in the fall of 2006 to raise funds to illuminate home soccer games. Through many generous donations and countless hours of planning, the lighting project progressed to the installation of the lights on February 25th of this year. The wiring was completed in March of 2009, as well and the lights will on for the first time, Wednesday, Sept. 2 when the NGU men take on Coker College at 6:00 p.m.
The official lighting ceremony will be held Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 7pm at the Pepsi Soccer Field Located on the campus of North Greenville University.
The lighting project will bring numerous benefits to the NGU soccer program, including less time spent out of class for athletes as well as increased fan attendance at evening games.
This project was brought to fruition by two major supporters of NGU, Jim Cox and Don Snyder. Jim Cox, President of Walker and Whiteside, has been a long time supporter of NGU athletics, providing electrical services to NGU on both the football and soccer lighting projects. Mr. Cox has vast experience with controls, high voltage, and electrical construction of all type structures and has served with Walker and Whiteside since 1960, taking over his present role as President in 1990. Walker and Whiteside specialize in industrial and commercial electrical contracting and have never defaulted on a project in their 60-year history, maintaining their philosophy “To deliver what you promise.”
Don Snyder of the Snyder Corporation is a new supporter of NGU and has proven to be invaluable and passionate in his support of NGU Athletics. Mr. Snyder’s recognition of a need for lighting for the Pepsi Soccer Stadium came from his support and direct involvement with the NGU soccer program through his son Seth, who is a current junior on the men’s soccer team.
