Crusaders fall at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, NC North Greenville and Belmont Abbey both wrapped up their regular seasons Monday afternoon as Belmont Abbey defeated North Greenville 4-0 at Alumni Field. The win improves the Abbey’s record to 13-4-2, while North Greenville falls to 6-8.

Four Abbey players recorded goals as Abbey jumped out ahead in the 22nd minute. Senior midfielder Nick Wyatt tapped a pass to sophomore midfielder Daniel Morrison, who cranked a shot from 25 yards out that deflected off of a North Greenville defender and into the net to give the Abbey a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, junior forward Luis Arrieta fired home his CVAC leading 19th goal of the year as defender Kyle Fenner sent a long pass to the feet of Arrieta, who got behind the defense and ripped a shot past Jim Burton to extend the lead to 2-0.

The lead remained 2-0 until the 81st minute when Dirk Jansson and Terrell Bush assisted junior forward Nana Agyeman’s third goal of the year.

With a 1:21 to play in the contest, senior Kyle Conrad closed the scoring when he gathered the ball from 40 yards out, spun on a heel and fired a rocket on a line that snuck just under the crossbar for his first goal of the year.

The Crusaders outshot North Greenville 18-4 and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Brian Alenky made one save in the net for the Abbey, while Burton was credited with seven.

North Greenville will be back in action November 9-10 at the NCCAA Regional tournament to be held at Southern Wesleyan University.
