MacDonald Claims Individual Champion in Anderson

Anderson, SC - Junior Tucker MacDonald led the way for the North Greenville University Men’s Golf Team at the Anderson University Fall Invitational on the par 72 7,005 yard Cobb’s Glenn Country Club in Anderson, SC. North Greenville began the final round in 2nd place 6 strokes behind 1st round leader UNCP and 3 shots clear of Erskine College in 3rd.

Leading by six shots heading into the final round, UNC Pembroke (292-300=592) slipped eight strokes, but held off both Erskine (301-297=598) and Milligan College (307-291=598) by six strokes, to capture the team titile. After a tough finishing stretch the North Greenville men (298-301=599) slipped from second to finish the event in fourth place, 2 shots out of solo second.

“We had a good chance coming down the stretch to put some pressure on UNCP, but unfortunately the ball just didn’t bounce our way on the last few holes, we will learn from a tough finish like this and be better from it.” said Assistant Coach Brad Caldwell.

MacDonald, who fired an opening round bogey-free 69, entered the final round of play 2 shots back of 1st round leader Michael Mullmann of UNCP.  After a slow start to the final round MacDonald found himself 6 shots back mid way through the front-9 but birdies on 8, 10 and a series of bogeys by Mullmann put MacDonald in the lead with only a few holes left.  MacDonald needed a 7 footer for par at the last for the individual title and curled it in on the high side to seal his 2nd career tournament win of his career.

“I put myself in good position after day 1 and knew as a team we had some ground to make up, I was just trying to play my best and give the team a chance to win. I didn’t really know how I stood down the last few holes but I just prayed and focused on representing myself in a Christ-like manner and it made the difference, I wish we could have pulled it out as a team but it keeps us hungry” said Champion Tucker MacDonald.

Sam Goodnight posted scores of 73-77 for top 10 finish. Christian Constance playing in his first collegitate tournament fired a 78-74 for a top 20 finish and Josh O'neal 78-78 and Lucas Polin 85-77 rounded out the scores for the North Greenville men.

The North Greenville men will have a few weeks off before they compete again at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate October 6th-8th hosted by Lincoln Memorial University at the Sea Trail Golf Links.
