Wilson, N.C.—The North Greenville men’s golf team turned in its first top three performance of the 2014 season on Tuesday afternoon, finishing the Barton Intercollegiate Tournament in second place.
The Crusaders turned in a first day score of 311 on Monday, 16 shots off of leader and tournament host Barton College. The Bulldogs would go on to take the title, finishing three shots ahead of NGU in day two team scoring as the Crusaders carded out with a 309. North Greenville finished tied for second with 21st ranked University of Mount Olive as both teams finished the two-day competition with a combined team total of 620.
The Crusaders battled in soggy, cold conditions on both days of the Barton Intercollegiate, battling rain and temperatures around 35 degrees. Tucker MacDonald led the charge for North Greenville, finishing the weekend, shooting a two day total of 153. MacDonald shot a 78 on day one, but recovered on day two, posting a three over par, 75.
North Greenville had three other golfers inside the top 25, and two inside the top 20 as well. Joshua Hopwood finished with scores of 74 and 81, earning himself a 12th place finish, while Josh ONeal’s 157 (78/79) rounded out the top 20 finishers for the Crusaders.
Sam Goodnight also had a solid two days in North Carolina, turning a 22nd place finish with an 81 on day one and a 77 on day two for a 158 total. Rounding out the top 30 finishers for the Crusaders is Christian Constance who placed in 29th place with a two-day total of 165.
The Crusaders will have 12 days between tournaments, as they gear up for the inaugural Cliffs Intercollegiate, hosted by North Greenville and the Cliffs at Mountain Park. The Cliffs Intercollegiate is scheduled to tee off on March 30 and run through April first.
