Goodnight Claims Rock Barn Championship
The North Greenville Men’s Golf team competed this past Monday and Tuesday October 28-29, 2013 in the Rock Barn Intercollegiate hosted by Lenoir-Ryhne University on the beautiful Rock Barn Golf and Spa-Jones course. The championship course played to a par of 72 and 7,027 yards also host to the Greater Hickory KIA Classic of the Champions Tour last week.
The Jones Course will play host to the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championships. The Crusaders opened the Rock Barn Intercollegiate with a first round score of 305, which put them in 5th place heading into Tuesday’s final round out the 10 team field. North Greenville trailed first round leader Queens University (295) by 10 shots and were 5 back of second place Nike/GolfWorld No. 4 ranked University of South Carolina-Aiken. Junior Sam Goodnight led all Crusaders with an opening round of 72 (E) which included an inward nine bogey-free 32.
With ground to make up in Tuesday’s Final Round Men’s team needed solid play throughout the lineup. The Crusaders fired a Final round 300 to move up the leaderboard into solo 3rd place finishing with a two-day total of +29 (305-300= 605). Sitting in a tie for 2nd place individually heading into the Final Round, Junior Sam Goodnight played a near flawless round of golf shooting at 2-over par 74 for a two-day total of 146 to capture the 2013 Rock Barn Intercollegiate Individual Championship. Despite a few missed putts and a late charge from the other competitors Goodnight held on to a one shot victory.
“Coming down the stretch I knew I needed to make birdie at the last to have a chance, I was lucky enough to do that. I’ve been working hard and it’s nice to end the fall on a good note” said Goodnight. The low round of the tournament day two was carded by Senior Josh O’Neal who carded a -1 under par round of 71 to finish in a tie for 7th. Also for the Crusaders
Junior Tucker MacDonald finished with a +10 total of 154 (78-76) to tie for 24th, Freshman Christian Constance finished with a +14 total of 158 (79-79) to tie for 37th, and Junior Joshua Hopwood finished with +15 total of 159 (77-82) to tie for 42nd.
“I am extremely proud of Sam, it’s been a long time coming for him, he works as hard as anyone in the country and it’s good to see that pay off” added Assistant Coach Brad Caldwell “ We did a lot of positive things this fall one of the goals I had was to get inside the top 35 in the Rankings and with our finish this week I think we accomplished that, myself as well as the boys can’t wait for the spring season”
The Crusaders finished the fall season finishing in the top 5, 3 out of the 4 tournaments they competed in, as well as, two individual tournament champions with MacDonald winning the Anderson University Invitational and Goodnight winning the 2013 Rock Barn Intercollegiate.
