Tigerville, SC- The North Greenville’s Men’s golf team will begin its first season as a Conference Carolinas member this Monday September 19th when they begin play in their own back yard hosting the 2nd Cherokee Valley Fall Classic at Cherokee Valley Golf Club in Tigerville, SC.
The Crusaders will be one of five teams competing at the par-72, 6,800-yard P.B. Dye layout this weekend. The 36-hole event will be run from Monday thru Tuesday with 18 holes being played each day. Play will begin at 8:30 on Monday, admission is free and open to the public.
This marks the 5th year the Crusaders have played host at their home course, winning the title three of the five years as well as having the individual champion in 2009 and 2010. This year’s lineup for the first tournament will be led by Sophomore Josh O’Neal, Junior Danny Dippel as well as Senior Chancen Blackwood these three along with true Freshman Sam Goodnight and Tucker MacDonald will look to get the season started off on a good note.
The Crusaders are very optimistic this year after an uncharacteristic “down” year last year, and feel they have rebuilt the team to a championship contender. “ We had a down year last year we had lost a lot of our talent to graduation the year before and had a rough season but we went out in the off season, made some changes and got a good deep group of freshman.” said Head Golf Coach Jeff Pittillo. The Crusaders have added 9 new true freshman to the squad. “We’re gonna have to rely hard on our guys with the most experience Danny Dippel and Josh O’Neal to lead these freshman and get us rolling in the right direction, this is a very very talent group of freshman and I believe they will jump right in and make a huge impact.”added Coach Pittillo.
The Crusaders will continue through the fall with tournaments at Tusculum College Fall Classic Septemeber 26th -27th , King College Collegiate October 10th -11th, Lincoln Memorial Fall Invitational October 17th -18th , and concluding with NCCAA National Championships October 24th-26th. With this being the first season as a Conference Carolinas member the Crusaders are more than ready. “We have always played a NCAA Division II schedule this will be nothing new for us, if we can get better every week we tee it up I fully believe we will have a great shot at winning a Conference Championship, we want to be the first team to bring home that Conference Championship trophy back to Tigerville.”added former NCAA All-American and first year Assistant Coach Brad Caldwell
