Malone University fired a record breaking team score of 290 to open up a 13 stroke lead after round one of the NCCAA Championship. The NCCAA Championship record total is one stroke better than the previous 291 team score shot by Indiana Wesleyan University during the 2006 event.
On a day where patience was a virtue due to windy conditions, Malone was lead by Justin Lower's round of 3 under par 69. He was followed by Ben Smith (71), Michael Strayer (73), Richie Schembechler (77), and Quinn Parker (82). Lower's round was highlighted by an eagle two on the par 4 ninth hole where holed out from 130 yards.
Chasing the Pioneers in tomorrow's second round will be Southern Wesleyan University and Dallas Baptist University who tied for second at 303. Bethel College (306), North Greenville University (309) and Campbellsville University (310) round out the top 6 teams.
This is the 13th year for the NCCAA Golf Championship and the fourth year it has been contested at The Hombre Golf Club, a PGA Qualifying School site. Malone will be trying to capture their fourth title having won the 1999, 2000 and 2004 Championship banners.
Tomorrow's final round will be followed the Awards Ceremony featuring the presentation of donated food to the Panama City Rescue Mission. The NCCAA is conducting a year long food drive at all 22 National Championship site and over 50 Regional events in an effort to contribute 4,000 pounds of food to local food banks across the country.
