Columbia, SC- The men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to the state capital this weekend to compete in the CIU Invitational. Both teams made an impression as the men’s team brought home first place and the women’s team finished third.
Junior Brett Morley not only took first place for NGU, he also finished first overall out of 53 total runners with a winning time of 28:14 for the 8K (5 mile) race. To make things better for NGU, freshman Ahmad Nesbitt crossed the finish line one second behind Morley to take second place overall in only his second 8K race ever. Junior Jacob Simms finished in the top ten for the race and was third for the men’s team. Sophomores Ravon Wamer and Stefan Shealy both finished in the top 20.
The NGU women’s team also claimed the overall winner in the women’s 5K (3.1 mile) race as sophomore Kelly Knutson crossed the finish line first with a time of 22:16. Teammate Allison Beam stepped up for NGU finishing second for the team (11th overall) posting a time of 24:53. Senior Ansley Boltin and junior Chelsea Dyson were third and fourth for NGU, and both finished in the top 20.
The Crusaders had an extremely impressive day considering two tough factors: warm temperature and a difficult course. The cross country teams continue to improve with this meet being the most successful one of the season. Both teams will travel to Charleston, SC this coming weekend to compete in the biggest meet of the season so far, the Citadel Invitational.
