Cullowhee, NC- North Greenville Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams opened up their 2012 season as they raced in the Western Carolina University Cross Country Invitational on Friday September 1, 2012.
The men’s team took first place for the Non-Division I schools, and finished sixth in the overall team standings. Leading the way for the men’s team was junior Brett Morley who ran an impressive time of 16:20 in the 5K (3.1 mile) race. He was followed by NGU’s top runner from last year, Stefan Sheally, finishing with a time of 17:04. However, the surprise of the day for NGU was freshman runner, Ahmad Nesbitt, who posted a time of 17:12 in his first ever cross country race finishing third for the team. Junior Jacob Simms, sophomore Ravon Wamer, junior Dylan Blackwell, and senior John Wood rounded out the top seven for NGU helping the men’s team average to be a solid 17:22.
The women’s team also took first place for the Non-Division I schools, and finished seventh in the overall team standings. Continuing her role as NGU’s top female runner from last year, sophomore Kelly Knutson, finished first for the team posting a time of 13:25 in the women’s two mile race. Senior Ansley Boltin picked up where she left off last year running a time of 14:17 and finishing second for the team. Junior Chelsea Dyson, sophomore Bethany Armstrong, sophomore Allison Beam, and sophomore Corrine Schmidt all finished back to back in the race giving the women’s team an average of 14:36.
Head cross country coach Michael Bayne said, “I am so proud of these kids.” The NGU Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams will be back in action on Saturday September 15, 2012 at the Montreat Hyder-McMahill Collegiate Invitational in Black Mountain, NC.
