North Greenville edged by Catawba in non-conference action

Tigerville, S.C. – North Greenville men’s basketball dropped third game in a row on Thursday night as Catawba downed the Crusaders 98-84 in non-conference action.

The Crusaders had five players in double figures led by Miguel Reyes Cartagena who finished with 19. Daniel Burchette knocked down six of his 11 shots for 18-points while Justin Dotson and Tommy Wade finished with 12-points each. Matt Moore added 10-points. The Crusaders shot 40.6 percent as a team including a 9 of 23 performance from three-point range.

North Greenville led 51-42 with 16:01 left in the game as a jumper from Cartagena extended NGU’s lead to nine-points. Catawba answered with a run to trim the deficit to three points. The score remained close until the final minutes of the contest when the Indians put together an 11-3 spurt to open up a nine-point lead.

North Greenville shaved the Catawba lead down to six points with 1:36 left in the game on a Justin Dotson three pointer but a missed opportunity on the offensive end and a pair of Catawba free-throws created a four-point swing, putting North Greenville in a 10-point hole. Cartagena cut the lead to eight with a layup with 25-seconds on the clock but the Crusaders fell short of the comeback as the Indians escaped Tigerville with a come-from-behind victory.

North Greenville fell to 4-3 overall after the loss to the Indians. The Crusaders will take on Mount Olive on December 10th before taking some time off for Christmas break. The Crusaders and Trojans will tipoff at 4pm in Mount Olive, North Carolina.
