Wilson, N.C. - Miguel Reyes Cartagena knocked down a jumper with five seconds left on the clock lifting North Greenville to a 77-75 win over Barton College, Saturday evening in Wilson, N.C.
The Crusaders and Bulldogs battled back-and-forth in the first half as the lead changed hands eight times in the span of 20-minutes. The Crusaders led by as many as five points during the first half, but the Bulldogs would take the lead into the locker room as a they closed the half on a 6-0 run to lead 38-33.
North Greenville would open the second half on a run of its own as a 6-2 outburst earned the Crusaders a 41-40 lead. The Bulldogs would continue to hang with NGU and eventually regain a slight edge, as a Jake Veasley jumper would give them a slim 53-51 advantage.
NGU and Barton would trade off leads for a couple possessions before the Crusaders would gain the upper hand once again as a set of Justin Dotson free throws and a Daniel Burchette layup made the score 61-57. The Crusaders would hold serve until the 45-second mark when Barton evened the score at 75-75 with a pair of free throws, leaving 21 seconds on the clock.
North Greenville would set up for the last shot and put the ball into the hands of its junior point guard Miguel Cartagena who sealed the win with his 16th point of the game as the clock expired.
Cartagena finished the night with 16-points of 7 of 15 shooting and three assists. Korval McElroy led the team in scoring with 24-points to lead all scorers while Justin Dotson finished with 15-points.
The Crusaders improved to 7-11 on the season and 4-7 in Conference Carolinas play while the Bulldogs fell to 14-6 and 9-3. NGU will host Limestone College on February 3rd at 7:30pm.
