Salisbury, N.C. - North Greenville men's basketball team suffered a less than ideal start to the New Year on Saturday as the Catawba Indians handed the Crusaders a 75-56 loss.
The Crusaders struggled from the field shooting 38.8 percent while the Indians knocked down 41 percent of their shots. Miguel Reyes Cartagena led North Greenville will 11 points and was NGU's only double-digit scorer.
The Crusaders trailed by 17 points at half after leading briefly in the opening moments of the game. A 17-3 run by Catawba would earn the Indians a 24-11 lead as the clocked ticked to the 9:43 mark of the first half. The Crusaders would find themselves down 17 at the half.
The Crusaders would fall victim to a very effecting shooting attack early in the second period as the Indians shot 57 percent en route to a 29 point lead. The Crusaders would battle back to cut the lead to 19 with 5:07 left in the game as Justin Dotson knocked down one of his two three pointers.
The lead would be cut to 17 on a Cartagena three pointer with 3:01 left in the game but the Crusaders would score just five more points down the stretch as they fell to 3-5 overall on the season.
NGU will be back in action on Tuesday night in Tigerville as they open the 2016 conference slat, hosting King University. The Crusaders and Tornado will tip off at 7:30pm in Hayes Gymnasium.
