North Greenville dropped its opening game of the season to Coker College on Friday night in the annual SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge by a score of 63-57.
The Crusaders took their only lead of the game on the opening possession as Justin Dotson hit a three after an offensive rebound by Jai Jencks. Coker would respond with a three of their own less than a minute later and followed with a 9-4 run to take the score to 12-7. The teams traded baskets throughout the rest of the first half as the Crusaders knocked the lead down to one point late in the first half. Coker, however, went on a late run and finished the first half ahead 25-20.
The second half saw the Cobras come out on the gas pedal, as they took the lead all the way up to 12 points at the 14-minute mark. North Greenville chipped at the lead throughout the half but were unable to make a sizable dent as the Cobras hung on for their first win of the season.
Dotson led the Crusaders on the offensive end, putting in 20 points on the night to go along with seven rebounds and one assist. Jencks had a double-double, scoring 12 points and adding 13 rebounds to finish the night. Korval McElroy led the team with two assists.
The Crusaders return to action tomorrow night in the second game of the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge against Newberry College. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on the campus of Erskine College.
