Banner Elk, N.C.—The NGU Men's Basketball Team suffered a minor setback on Saturday, as the Crusaders fell to Lees-McRae College 79-75.
The Crusaders dropped from third to fourth in the Conference Carolinas standings, as teams jockey for post-season position. The Crusaders shot 50.9 percent from the field, led by Phillip Brown who led all scorers with 27 points.
NGU jumped out to an early six point lead in the opening five minutes of play, but the Bobcats, who won an earlier matchup between the two squads this season, battled back to even the score at 12 with 12:21 left in the first half. Lees-McRae would take the lead into halftime with a 39-37 advantage.
The start of the second half saw four ties in the opening three minutes of play as NGU played from behind, working to regain the advantage. The lead would never come for North Greenville however, as the Bobcats would go on to lead the final 15:25. The Crusaders would tie the score one more time with 2:51 left, using an 8-0 run to force the 12th tie of the game, but a three pointer from Kendall Isler would halt the run, and snatch the momentum from the Crusaders.
NGU would cut the lead to one, one more time with 14 seconds left, but Lees-McRae would put the game on ice with free throws as NGU was forced to foul to stop the clock, escaping with the four point victory.
The Crusaders fell to 16-9 on the season and 9-8 in Conference Carolinas play while the Bobcats improved to 10-8. Lashawn Alexander put down 16 points while Micah Parker Scored 12. North Greenville dominated in the paint, outscoring the Bobcats 46-28.
NGU will host Belmont Abbey on Wednesday the 18th with tip time scheduled for 7:30pm.
