Gaffney, S.C.—The North Greenville men's basketball team added another conference win to its resume on Saturday night, defeating local league rival Limestone College 60-54 in Gaffney, South Carolina.
The Crusaders shot just 38 percent from the field, Saturday, but managed to escape with their sixth Conference Carolinas win of the season. Spencer Reaves continued his solid freshmen campaign, leading all scorers with 19 points. Reaves is now the team leader in points scored this season, averaging 15 points per game. Korval McElroy scored 16 for North Greenville while Lashawn Alexander finished with 11.
The Crusaders got off to a quick start, leading by six in the opening minutes of the game. Limestone would tie the game at 14-14 with ten minutes left, but the Crusaders regained the lead on a jumper from Alexander, sparking a run that would quickly extend NGU's lead back out to eight points. North Greenville would take a five point lead into the locker room.
The Crusaders would score on their first three possessions of the second half to take a 37-26 lead. Phil Brown opened up the second half scoring with a layup while Micah Parker added a two pointer. Reaves capped the quick run with a layup off of a missed shot.
The Crusaders continued to lead for the entire second half, but not without some resistance from the Saints. Limestone cut North Greenville's lead to a two possession game several times in the remaining 10 minutes of the game, only to see their efforts thwarted by the NGU defense. NGU turned 14 LC turnovers into 14 points. Also helping the NGU cause was 17 bench points, 16 of which were from McElroy.
North Greenville improved to 12-6 on the season a 6-5 in Conference Carolinas play after Saturday's win over Limestone. NGU will take on new league member Emmanuel College on January 29th in Franklin Springs, Georgia with the tipoff scheduled for 7:30pm.
