Brown, Johnson Honored By Conference
Tigerville, SC – North Greenville University’s own Phillip Brown and Keith Johnson have both been recognized as Conference Carolinas’ All-Conference award winners as announced on Tuesday evening.
Brown, a junior from Travelers Rest, was named to the All-Conference First Team after a breakout season which saw him lead the team in scoring at 17.3 points per game, which was also good for 8th in the conference and rebounds with 11.8 per contest, good enough for 1st in the conference rankings. The 6’7” forward was also 2nd in the conference with 2.8 blocks per game.
The 2013 season for Brown was highlighted by 16 double-doubles, including a career-high 37 points on 14-for-21 shooting from the floor with 17 rebounds in a win over Lees McRae College. Brown also recorded back-to-back 20-rebounds performances in early January en route to setting a school record for rebounds in a single game and his 331 total rebounds also set a single season record for the Crusader program.
Johnson, a senior from Hopkins, SC, was 10th in the conference and 2nd on the team with 16.7 points per game, while being the team’s best ball handler with 119 total assists, good enough for 4.4 assists per game to go along with 4.8 rebounds per game to earn Third Team All-Conference honors.
The 6’4” guard was the Crusaders most clutch performer which was shown early in the season in an overtime win over Belmont Abbey in Tigerville. Johnson tied the game with a three-pointer as time expired in regulation only to hit the game-winning jumper in the extra period to seal the victory.
In a win over Limestone, Johnson scored a career-high 33 points on 12-for-19 shooting, including a school-record eight three-pointers in the game, while totaling a career-high 12 assists with 19 points in a win over Pfeiffer University in mid-February.
