ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − The freshman backcourt tandem of D.J. Ferguson and John Pietkiewicz combined for 34 points on 13-of-23 shooting from the field to lead Flagler College to an 81-56 win over North Greenville University of Tigersville, S.C. in a non-conference menís basketball game Monday night at Flagler Gym. Flagler wins its third consecutive game and moves to 9-4 overall while North Greenville falls to 2-9.
Ferguson recorded his second consecutive double-double with 17 points and 13 assists and also grabbed eight rebounds. He made 7-of-10 from the field and also grabbed four steals. Pietkiewicz made 6-of-13 and 3-of-8 from behind the arc for the Saints. Senior forward Bryan Borstelmann added 10 points and a season-high seven steals. Junior guard Jon Matthews came off the bench to add 10 points and three assists.
Adam Griggs scored a team-high 16 points and added five rebounds for North Greenville. Andrew Nipper chipped in with 12 points and Tyler Mains grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Crusaders hung around for much of the first half. Austin Randel scored a layup and then polished it off with a free throw to convert the old fashioned three-point play and Flaglerís lead was trimmed to 25-23 with 6:27 to go in the fist half.
The Saints would score the next eight points, aided by three fastbreak layups, to take a 33-23 lead with 2:14 left in the half. Flagler would take a 37-25 lead into the half.
Kyler Vitko layed one in off the glass off a Nathan Wilson pass with 14 minutes to play in the game and North Greenville was down just 51-46.
Over the next 7:28, Flagler would go on a 24-3 run and pull out to a 26-point lead (75-49) to seal the victory.
North Greenville returns to action Saturday at home versus Morris College. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
