Limestone downs Crusaders

GAFFNEY, S.C.- The Limestone College menís basketball team defeated North Greenville University, 86-81, on Thursday night at the Timken Center. The Saints improve to 4-3 overall while the Crusaders fall to 3-6 for the season.

Shawn Poppie announced his return to the Limestone lineup by nailing two three-pointers for the Saintsí first six points of the game, and tallied 17 of his 26 points before the first half was over. Poppie had missed the last three games with an injury.Terrell Smith also had a good night, scoring 25 points and leading the Saints with five rebounds. Marq Bell chipped in 11 points.

North Greenville was led in scoring by Daniel Morbitzer (Lexington, S.C.), who had 27 points. Amonzo Gantt (Royston, Ga.) had 11 and Austin Randel (Lake City, Mich.) scored 10. Gantt also had a game-high seven rebounds.

The Saints converted 14 points from nine North Greenville turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, while the Crusaders had a 22-10 advantage on points in the paint. However, the hosts had 21 points from long range compared to the visitorís 6.

The second half was close as Limestone edged NGU, 48-46, in scoring. The Saints shot 51.9% from the field during the game (28-52) compared to the Crusaderís 57.4% (27-47). Limestone had 42 points from three-point shots, while the Crusaders only had 18.

North Greenville will break for Christmas and return to action January 4, 2007 at Anderson University.
