Crusaders drop opener to Bulldogs 103-82
Freshman Austin Randel scores game-high 29 points

TIGERVILLE, SC- The North Greenville University menís basketball team dropped its season opener in Hayes Gymnasium to Wingate University by a score of 103-82 in NCAA Division II action Wednesday night.

Three Crusaders scored in double figures, led by freshman Austin Randel who scored a game-high 29 points. Senior guard Jordan Richmond dropped in 16 points and six rebounds, while freshman Kyler Vitko added 14 points.

Five Bulldogs finished in double figures to out-pace North Greenville. Sean Barnette scored 24 points on 9-16 shooting. Shaun Kirkland and Brian Grier had 17 points each for Wingate, while Sam Holmes and Greg Wenger chipped in 13 and 11 points respectively.

Three point field goals were the story for the Bulldogs in the first half, hitting nine of nineteen. North Greenville was able to keep the game close for the first 13 minutes, but a 3-pointer by Holmes at the 7:13 mark gave the Bulldogs a seven point lead. It would not get any closer the rest of the night. Wingate rode 55.9% shooting to a 51-34 halftime lead. North Greenville shot an even 50% before the break.

Randel got hot in the second half for the Crusaders, scoring 17 points on 6-11 shooting. North Greenville hit seven 3-pointers in the second half, but the Crusaders could not cut the margin any lower than 14 points.

North Greenville falls to 0-1 on the season, while Wingate moves to 1-0. The Crusaders will be back in action Monday night in Hayes Gymnasium as they play host to Warren Wilson College. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
