Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior guard Justin Baker (Lumberton, N.C.) hit 27 points as the Bulldogs defeated North Greenville University 85-76 in NCAA Division II men’s basketball action Wednesday night in Cuddy Arena.
With the non-conference victory, Wingate improves to 11-8 overall. North Greenville falls to 9-13 overall. The Crusaders return to action Saturday at 4:00 p.m. as they host Morris College.
Baker was not a one-man show. Wingate sophomore guard/forward Sean Barnette (Rock Hill, S.C.) had 19 points, while redshirt sophomore center Bryan Grier (Charlotte, N.C.) had 12 points, four rebounds, four blocks and four assists.
Four Crusaders hit double figures, led by junior forward Amonzo Gantt (Royston, Ga.) and his 16 points. North Greenville junior forward Daniel Morbitzer (Lexington, S.C.) contributed a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Crusader junior guard P.J. Schumacher (Waynesburg, Pa.) and sophomore forward Andrew Nipper (Cleveland, Tenn.) chipped in 14 points each. Nipper contributed seven rebounds as North Greenville outrebounded Wingate 44-34.
This week’s SAC Player of the Week, Baker scored 22 points in the first half as the Bulldogs sprinted to a 49-35 halftime lead. Wingate shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) in the first half, while holding North Greenville to 38.2 percent (13-of-34).
On the evening, Wingate made 15-of-30 three-point field goals. Baker hit five-of-eight, while Barnette nailed five-of-10 trifectas. On the other hand, North Greenville made only seven-of-18 triples.
