Pembroke, NC – Lee Moore netted 22 points, while Jeffrey Brown scored 19 to lead UNC Pembroke to a 90-86 victory over visiting North Greenville Monday night at the Jones Center. With the win, UNCP earns its fourth victory this season, eclipsing last year’s win total of three. NGC falls to 1-8 on the year.
Up one, 74-73, with 4:44 remaining in the game, UNCP hit ten free throws and drained two three-pointers in the final four minutes to take command and squeak out the win in a foul-laden game that saw a combined 54 fouls called, 29 of which the Braves were whistled for.
Point guard Scooter Lawrence, who scored 12 points, made six of Pembroke’s final ten free throws, while Jabarr Adams hit three from the charity stripe down the stretch. Both Curtis Royal and Browned drained critical three-pointers in the waning moments to give the Braves the momentum.
Leading the Crusaders was Amonzo Gantt, who posted a double-double with 21 points and 16 boards, which led all rebounders. Three others scored in double digits for North Greenville; Victor Duck had 18, Daniel Morbitzer netted 17 and PJ Schumacker scored 12.
NGC pulled down 26 boards on the offensive glass and out rebounded UNCP 58 to 33, but turned the ball over 26 times compared to the Braves 16.
For the game UNCP, which had a 47-39 halftime lead, shot 44 percent from the floor, including 40 percent (12-30) from behind the arc and 18 of 29 from the free throw line. North Greenville meanwhile, made 31 field goals on 67 attempts (46 percent), however, the Crusaders could only manage 7 of 32 from long range and 17 of 35 from the charity stripe.
The Braves will travel to North Georgia for a doubleheader with the Lady Braves on Thursday, December 15, while NGC will take some time off for the holidays before traveling to Lincoln Memorial on January 3.
