TIGERVILLE, SC- Sophomore point guard Victor Duck paced North Greenville with 19 points and four assists, but in the end the Crusaders fell to Wingate University 81-74 Tuesday night in Hayes Gymnasium. Duck hit five of North Greenville's season-high 12 three-point field goals. Sean Barnette led all scorers with 21 points for the Bulldogs, while Bryan Grier added 19 points.
The two teams exchanged the lead throughout the first half and ended the half all knotted up at 36. North Greenville went on a 9-0 run to open the second half on two Duck three-pointers and one from Josh Burgess. Wingate then began to hit on all cylinders, going on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 47-47 on two Fernando Powell free throws with 14:43 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs would gain the lead when Shaun Kirkland hit a layup 34 seconds later. Wingate would only trail once more the rest of the night as they steadily built upon their lead.
North Greenville won the turnover battle by committing only 9 to Wingate's 12. The Crusaders were able to convert Wingate's turnover into 16 points, more than twice Wingate's points off turnovers. However, Wingate won the game in the paint, outscoring North Greenville 44-22.
Josh Burgess recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Crusaders. As a team, North Greenville shot 39.7% on 29-73 shooting.
North Greenville falls to 1-4 on the season, while Wingate improves to 3-1. The Crusaders will be back in action in Hayes Gymnasium Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. as they host Presbyterian College.
