Tigerville, S.C. - Tracy Scott’s huge game lead the North Greenville Crusaders to take down the Carson Newman Eagles 34-24 today as they honored their seniors final home game. The Crusaders improve to 6-4 on the season with an impressive 4-2 record at home.
The Crusaders had not beaten the Eagles since the 2011-12 season, in which they beat Carson Newman 34-27.
Of the last six meetings between these two teams, this is the fourth time that the final score was decided by ten points or less.
North Greenville would find success in moving the ball up and down the field in the first half as they went on to put up 196 yards on 25 total plays. The Crusaders would find the endzone twice in the first half as well as put one through the uprights to finish the half up 17-10 on the Eagles.
Carson Newman had the first shot at putting points up on the board as CNU’s kicker Carson Wise set up for a 50 yard field goal that would go on to miss giving the Crusaders the Ball on their own 33.
The First Scoring drive of the game occurred following the missed field goal by Carson Newman when the Crusaders drove 63 yards on 11 plays to set up North Greenville Kicker Matt Gravely to put a 21 yard field goal through the uprights giving the Crusaders a 3-0 lead over the Eagles.
A three and out from the Eagles after the field goal highlighted by a nine yard tackle for loss by Crusaders Rochar Witherspoon and Eddie Studyvance would set up the Crusaders next drive. A big pass from Will Hunter to Jovan Smith would put the Crusaders in the Red Zone. After a False Start Penalty, Will Hunter would hit tight end Bobby Foos for the first touchdown of the Game capping off a 4 play 60 yard drive, giving North Greenville a 10-0 over Carson Newman.
Carson Newman would find some success offensively after the Crusader touchdown by rushing their way up the field to set up Kicker Carson Wise for a 33 yard field goal to put their first score up on the board. North Greenville still lead The Eagles 10-3.
Carson Newman would get the ball back almost immediately as Ashton Heard fumbled the ball on first down, handing the ball back over to the Eagles on the Crusader twenty-two yard line. The Eagles would work their way to the the one yard line and Quarterback Noah Suber would keep it himself for the game tying touchdown.
After giving up the ball on first down, The crusaders would drive up the field with several big passes from Will Hunter, most notably a 38 yard pass to Bobby foos to set the Crusaders up in the Red Zone. Jovan Smith would get the ball on a jet sweep to cross the goal line for the second Crusader touchdown to cap off a 5 play 54 yard drive and reclaim the lead 17-10 just before halftime.
At halftime, Will Hunter would have 117 yards on five completions and a touchdown, Ashton Heard would have 52 yards on eight carries and Bobby Foos would lead all receivers with 55 yards on 2 receptions.
Both teams would drive up and down the field in the third quarter but neither team would find a way to score. The Crusaders would try to put points on the board with a 39 yard field goal but Matt Gravely’s kick would go wide right. Carson Newman would try to capitalize of a successful fake punt but the Crusaders Defense wouldn’t allow them another first down.
The Crusaders would start the fourth quarter off strong as Will Hunter would find Christian Bruce up the sideline for a 27 yard touchdown pass to cap off a 6 play 63 yard drive extending the crusader lead to 24-10.
The Eagles were determined to keep the score close and would respond with a 53 yard touchdown pass from Noah Suber to Antonio Wimbush to cut the Crusader lead to 24-17 with 12:42 left in the game.
After the 53 yard touchdown pass to Wimbush. The Eagles kicker Carson Wise would set the Crusaders up with the ball at the NGU 35 after kicking the ball out of bounds. Tracy Scott got the ball on the first and only play of the drive as he ran for 65 yards and a touchdown. This 1 play 65 yard touchdown drive would put North Greenville up 31-17.
After several scoreless drives from both teams, Noah Suber would find Antonio Wimbush deep down field and get the ball to the one yard line. After a Personal Foul from Rochar Witherspoon, Noah Suber would keep it himself and plunge across the goal line on a one yard touchdown run. This drive would cut the Crusader lead to 31-24 with 2:54 left in the game.
The Crusaders would recover Carson Newman’s onside kick and try to run the clock out. Tracy Scott almost broke away for another big score but was tripped up before the end zone. The Crusaders would rely on Matt Gravely to put three on the board and he did just that putting a 32-yarder through the uprights giving North Greenville a 34-24 lead with 55.8 seconds left.
Carson Newman tried to go up field and score but North Greenville’s Anthony Blair would break into the backfield to force and snag a fumble giving the Crusaders the ball. Will Hunter would go on to knee the ball and end the game with a Crusader victory.
Will Hunter would be the leading passer on the game with 220 yards on 11 completions with two touchdowns. Tracy Scott would dominate rushing with 157 yards on 16 carries with one touchdown and Jovan Smith would finish the game with 4 receptions and a touchdown and Bobby Foos would finish with 80 receiving yards. The Crusader offense would finish the game with 476 total yards of offense and 4 touchdowns.
The Crusaders will travel to Gaffney, South Carolina on Saturday, November 12, 2016 to take on the Limestone College Saints as they pursue a playoff berth.
