Crusaders Drop Final Game Of 2013 Season
Newberry, SC – The Newberry offense was firing on all cylinders as the Wolves made a push for the NCAA Division II Playoffs with a 55-21 victory over North Greenville University on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves scored on three of their first four drives to take an early 17-0 lead after one and a half quarters of play before receiver Corey Washington returned a Crusader punt 85 yards to push the lead to 24-0 in favor of Newberry midway through the second quarter.

On the ensuing drive, the Crusaders drove 75 yards on 13 plays to get on the board with a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Nelson Hughes with 1:50 remaining on the clock. A 34-yard rush by Newberry’s Raleigh Yeldell gave the Wolves a 31-7 edge at the half.

Newberry scored once again on their first drive of the second half with a 31-yard field goal before Hughes scored his second touchdown of the game on a two-yard rush as the Wolves led 34-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Two more touchdowns put the Wolves ahead by 34 points before Hughes connected with senior wide receiver Freddie Martino on a 76-yard touchdown pass as the Crusaders cut into the Newberry lead early in the final quarter of play. One more touchdown by the Wolves with 3:18 left in the game to secure the 34-point victory at home.

Hughes finished the game 16-for-28 for 216 yards and one touchdown through the air, while adding two more scores on the ground. Martino set the NCAA Division II record for receptions in a season after catching 11 passes for 186 yards and a score. Trey Walker carried the ball 15 times for 85 yards, while fellow freshman Simeon Byrd rushed for 58 yards of his own on 10 carries.

On defense, freshman linebacker Sam Houston led the way with nine total tackles and two tackles for a loss, as fellow freshmen Nigel Gay and Quan Weeks also recorded nine tackles each. Linebacker Reubyn Walker finished the game with eight tackles, two tackles for a loss and one sack, while senior defensive lineman Jonathan White totaled seven tackles and a tackle for loss 
in his final college game.

The Crusader finish the 2013 season with a 5-6 overall record, including a 3-5 against South Atlantic Conference opponents in alliance play.
