The North Greenville Crusaders have been working through spring practices this week under the direction of first year head football coach Jeff Farrington. The Crusaders are coming off a 5-6 2012 campaign, finishing the year on a four game winning streak.
Coach Farrington said of the current work the team is doing, “You’re always trying to improve in the fundamentals, and the fundamentals do not change with the game of football. It’s blocking and tackling and getting off of blocks and trying to break tackles.”
The players are also learning the new schemes and terminology from the new NGU coaching staff. In turn, spring practice is important for the coaches to learn about their new players. Minimal changes will be made to the offensive and defensive schemes, as the coaching staff will look to adjust to the capabilities of the team.
Position battles will emerge throughout the offseason, as the depth chart will begin to take shape. Notably will be the position battle at running back, as the Crusaders return all running backs from last season including Ashton Heard returning from injury. The starting quarterback spot will also be a battle with Nelson Hughes, Joey Carter, and Tyrell Hillary all receiving playing time last year. Throughout the spring, the staff will be looking to develop depth within the team.
The Crusaders will also return a lot of talent including Braelen Meredith who finished last season with 6.5 sacks. Coach Farrington has been very impressed with the leadership out of this senior class, saying, “We’ve got a good foundation I believe.” Said Coach Farrington.
The Crusaders will close out spring football with the annual “Red and Black” spring game scheduled for Thursday, April 25 at 6 p.m.. Fans and parents are encouraged to attend the game to watch the returning players in action and meet the recruits for the 2013 season.
