Andre Bernardi, North Greenville University’s stellar senior defensive lineman, has added yet another post-season honor to his impressive resume as he was one of the three defensive linemen named First Team All-State by the Orangeburg Touchdown Club. Bernardi will be honored at the Club’s seventh annual banquet Monday, Feb. 8.
Bernardi was a Second Team Daktronics NCAA II All-American this season and competed in two post-season all-star games that were exclusively for Division II players -- the East Coast Bowl in Petersburg, Va. and the Valero Cactus Bowl in Kingsville, Texas. Bernardi is the all-time career leader in NCAA II history in sacks with 42. He was the first Crusader in school history to be recognized as a NCAA Division II All-American as well. The Marietta, Ga. native led NGU with 54 tackles, 20.5 for loss and 13.5 sacks this past season. He was also a first-team Division II-All Independent selection.
Since 2003, the Touchdown Club has recognized the Palmetto State’s top collegians among its 12 Football Championship Subdivision and Football Bowl Subdivision programs. In recent years, the OTC has put together an All-State College Football team consisting exclusively of FCS and Division II players.
Along with the 2009 edition of the All-State College Football Team, the OTC will recognize a top rookie from both the University of South Carolina and Clemson University to be named prior to the banquet.
This year’s guest speaker will be University of South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson.
Other speakers like former head coaches Lou Holtz and Tommy Bowden and current head coaches Steve Spurrier and Dabo Swinney have made their presence known at OTC banquet.
