Tigerville, SC -- Andre Bernardi, North Greenville University’s three-time All-American at defensive end, has been tabbed as the NCAA Division II Independent Colleges’ pre-season Defensive Player of the Year, it was announced Sunday, by D2football.com, one of the NCAA’s official sources for football news.
Bernardi, a native of Marietta, GA, who has collected a trophy room full of honors during his three seasons at NGU, is set to lead a veteran NGU defense into the 2009 season Saturday, Aug. 29 against Mars Hill College at 7:00 p.m. at Younts Stadium.
The 6-3 275 speedy defensive end, had a team best 51 total tackles last season, and 8.5 sacks. He had 39 solo tackles and 13 quarterback hurries during a standout junior campaign. He also lined up at tight end a few times last season and caught one touchdown pass for 11 yards.
“Andre Bernardi is a special kind of player and when you’re a first year coach, it’s nice to know you’ve got one of the best players in the country anchoring your defense,” new NGU head coach Jamey Chadwell said. “We know Andre’s work ethic and his leadership abilities, and I think he will have a great season to show he’s worthy of these honors.”
