Crusaders send seniors out with 40-6 victory

TIGERVILLE, SCNorth Greenville University celebrated Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day in exciting fashion. The festivities began with the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division parachuting the game ball and flags into Younts Stadium. Halftime featured a flyover by F-16 CJ fighter jets. The day concluded with a 40-6 victory for the Crusaders over UNC Pembroke.

The Crusaders improve to 5-6 on the season, while the Braves fall to 4-7.

The win marks North Greenville head coach Mike Taylor’s 100th career victory.

North Greenville honored five seniors for their contributions to the Crusader football program: OL Dexter Durham, PK Adrian Escalona, WR Justin Miller, QB Eric Moeller, and WR Travis Talbert.

Moeller completed his North Greenville career with his fifth 300-yard game of the season. Moeller completed 23 of 32 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns.

Moeller’s favorite target of the day was Brandon Dobbins, who caught nine passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Travis NeeSmith recorded five receptions, while Talbert capped his Crusader career with four receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns.

Rashad Cummings led the ground game for North Greenville, gaining 138 yards on 34 carries. Cummings scored one touchdown.

Defensively, Tyrell Davis led the Crusaders by recording nine tackles, including 4.5 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks. Davis also made one interception.

Ryan Horton led the Braves on offense, completing 13 of 24 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown. Darrin Watkins made five receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Adam Deese made ten tackles to lead the Braves defense.

North Greenville opened the scoring with an 18-yard field goal from Adrian Escalona at the 7:04 mark in the first quarter. After forcing a punt, the Crusaders extended the lead to 10-0 with an eight-play, 61-yard drive, capped by Cummings’ 1-yard run. Michael Sears added the PAT.

UNC Pembroke cut the score to 10-6 on a 7-yard pass from Ryan Horton to Darrin Watkins. The PAT attempt failed.

On their next possession, the Crusaders went 75 yards in ten plays for a touchdown. Moeller connected with Dobbins from seven yards on the score. Sears added the PAT to put North Greenville up 17-6 with 10:30 remaining in the second quarter.

North Greenville added one more touchdown before halftime as Moeller found Talbert in the left side of the end zone from 15 yards out. Sears’ PAT made the score 24-6.

The Crusaders wasted no time scoring in the second half. Matt Moore took the handoff 81-yards to the end zone on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. Sears’ PAT made the score 31-6.

North Greenville forced a punt on the Braves’ ensuing possession. Then, Moeller hit Dobbins for a 52-yard touchdown strike to put the Crusaders up 38-6 with 10:49 remaining in the third quarter.

The Crusaders threatened to score another touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, but failed to convert a fourth-and-two from the four-yard line. UNCP took over on downs, but was sacked in the end zone by Jarius Mack on third-down for a safety to make the score its final of 40-6.
