MURFREESBORO, NCNorth Greenville University used a stellar performance from both its offense and defense en route to a 56-14 victory over Chowan University Saturday at Garrison Stadium. The Crusaders improve to 2-6, while the Hawks fall to 1-7.

The North Greenville defense forced ten Chowan punts, while giving up only 294 yards and 12 first downs. The Crusaders, however, put up 635 yards on 32 first downs.

North Greenville’s defense was led by freshman linebacker Aaron Simmons who recorded 10 tackles, including five solo tackles. Matt Moore, who moved from running back to cornerback last week, made seven solo tackles and one assisted tackle.

Quarterback Josh Floyd led the Hawks, rushing for 98 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, while completing five of 17 passes for 77 yards and one touchdown.

Both teams threatened on their first possession, but a turnover on downs near the goal line for the Crusaders and a missed field goal for the Hawks yielded no points for either squad.

After forcing a punt from the Hawks, the Crusaders drove 54 yards in seven plays to extend the lead to 14-0 with 1:41 remaining in the first quarter. Moeller connected with Talbert on a 15-yard fade route down the right sideline for the touchdown. Sears added the PAT.

Cummings added the next touchdown on a 21-yard run at the 11:23 mark in the second quarter. Sears’ PAT put the Crusaders up 21-0.

A third Chowan punt gave North Greenville the ball again. On the first play of the drive, Talbert took a swing pass for 60 yards down the right sideline to the Hawks eight-yard line. Two plays later, Moeller hit Jarvis Garrett in the end zone for a two-yard score. Sears’ PAT made the score 28-0 with 7:54 remaining in the second quarter.

After a series of punts from both teams, Moeller hit Talbert for his third touchdown of the game, this one a 51-yard strike. Sears’ PAT gave the Crusaders a 35-0 lead with 1:35 left in the first half.

Chowan drove the field, scoring with one second left in the first half on a 19-yard fade route connection in the end zone from Floyd to James Fox. Cory Cline added the PAT to make the halftime score 35-7.

Cummings opened up the second half scoring with a five-yard touchdown run to cap a 7-play, 37-yard drive with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter. Sears’ PAT put the Crusaders up 42-7.

Chowan answered on the very next possession as Floyd ran in from 38 yards out for the touchdown. Cline’s PAT cuts the score to 42-14.
