Crusaders turn over win to Bucs

TIGERVILLE, SCóTwo late turnovers cost North Greenville University a chance to notch its second victory of the season and the first over Charleston Southern University since 2003. The Buccaneers defeated the Crusaders 46-33 Saturday night at Younts Stadium.

Leading 33-31 with just over six minutes to play, North Greenville attempted to fake a punt, but Justin Jones fumbled into the end zone to be recovered by Charleston Southernís Alexius Ferguson to give the Bucs their first lead since their opening drive. Eli Byrdís two-point conversion pass to Vernon Huger was good to put the Bucs up 39-33.

On the ensuing possession, Jon Carmon intercepted a North Greenville pass and returned it 61 yards to the NGU 16-yardline. On the very next play, Ferguson scored from 16 yards out. Nick Ellisí PAT made the score its final of 46-33.

Charleston Southern amassed 537 yards of total offense, led by Byrdís 398 yards passing. Byrd completed 34 of 54 passes with one interception and four touchdown passes. Vernon Huger caught eight passes for 127 yards and one touchdown. Dee Brown hauled in seven receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Jada Ross led the Bucs defensively with nine tackles, while Josh Warrior and Mike McCann each recorded eight tackles.

North Greenville gained 470 yards of total offense, including 355 through the air. Eric Moeller completed 21 of 43 passes with one interception and four touchdown passes. Brandon Dobbins led a very busy Crusader receiving corps with six receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Travis NeeSmith and Travis Talbert each brought in five catches.

Tyrell Davis exploded for 18 tackles, including seven solo tackles and 2.5 tackles for a loss, while Doug Wilson notched 15 tackles to lead the Crusader defense.

The Bucs opened up the scoring on their first drive as Nick Ellis connected on a 20-yard field goal to give Charleston Southern the early 3-0 lead.

North Greenville answered on the ensuing possession when Eric Moeller hit Travis NeeSmith for a 41-yard score. Adrian Escalonaís PAT put the Crusaders up 7-3.

The Crusaders added to their total on an 8-yard touchdown strike from Moeller to Brandon Dobbins with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter. Escalonaís PAT capped a five-play, 73-yard drive to give North Greenville a 13-3 advantage.

Charleston Southern struck again at the 1:46 mark in the first quarter on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Byrd to Huger to cap an eight-play, 76-yard drive. Ellisí PAT cut the lead to 13-10.

Each squad struck twice in the second quarter. Matt Moore, in his first game since September 13th, scored on a 14-yard pass from Moeller at the 13:12 mark. Escalonaís kick made the score 20-10.

The Bucs cut the lead to three points on a Byrd 14-yard touchdown strike to Brown wit 2:48 remaining in the first half. Ellisí kick made the score 20-17.

Charleston Southern threatened nearing the end of the half, but Derrick Miller intercepted Byrdís pass to the end zone keep the Crusaders in the lead.

Charleston Southern opened the second half with an onside kick attempt, but the kick did not reach ten yards. With the illegal procedure penalty, the Crusaders took over on the Bucs 34-yard line. The Crusaders took seven plays to score again, this time on a 1-yard run by Moore. Escalonaís PAT made gave North Greenville a 27-17 lead.

The Bucs answered on their next possession, driving 49 yards in seven plays. Byrd capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Coffman. Ellisí PAT cut the score to 27-24.

Charleston Southern threatened to take the lead at the 2:02 mark in the third quarter, but Jarius Mack forced Byrd to throw incomplete on fourth-and-goal from the three-yard line.

After forcing North Greenville to punt on their next possession, Charleston Southern drove to the NGU 30-yard line, but Ellisí 47-yard field goal fell short.

North Greenville fumbled the ball to the Bucs on the next possession, but held CSU to a three-and-out, forcing a punt. On the first play of NGUís drive, Moeller hit Brandon Dobbins for a 71-yard touchdown strike. The PAT was blocked making the score 33-24 with 9:07 remaining in the game.

Charleston Southern answered one minute later on a 7-yard pass from Byrd to Brown. Ellisí kick cut the score to 33-31.

The Bucs rounded out the scoring on the recovered fumble and Fergusonís 16-yard run.

Charleston Southern improves to 2-3 on the season, while North Greenville falls to 1-4. North Greenville travels to Presbyterian College next Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
