Crusaders win Bunche Classic in weather-shortened contest

KINGSLAND, GANorth Greenville University amassed 532 yards en route to their first victory of the 2007 season, a 42-28 win over Edward Waters College to win the Ralph J. Bunche Classic trophy. The game was called due to inclement weather with 5:48 left in the game.

Bunche, an educator, was a 1950 Nobel Peace Prize winner. Edward Waters salutes education and educators with the 2007 Classic.

Rashad Cummings was named offensive MVP after rushing for 195 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.

Rodriguez Owens took the defensive MVP honors, recording 10 tackles, including one tackle for a loss.

Edward Waters opened up the scoring early, scoring on their first possession on a Rondez Dennis 4-yard run. The Crusaders blocked the PAT attempt.

North Greenville answered on the ensuing possession as Cummings scored on a 5-yard run at the 8:13 mark in the first quarter. Adrian Escalona’s PAT gave the Crusaders a 7-6 lead.

Curtis Dewberry scored the game’s next two touchdowns on runs of four yards each. Escalona’s PATs put the Crusaders up 21-6.

Kareem Dennis found Antonio Bellamy for a 16-yard touchdown with just 13 seconds remaining in the first half. Tentton Stewart caught a pass from Dennis for the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 21-14 at halftime.

Eric Moeller connected with Travis Talbert from three yards out to cap an eight-play 63-yard drive to put NGU up 28-21.

Tyrell Davis led the Crusaders defensively with seven tackles.

Dewberry and Cummings scored one more touchdown each on runs of 11 yards and 68 yards respectively.

Stewart rounded out the scoring with a 5-yard run at the 8:08 mark in the fourth quarter.

Moeller finished the game 18 of 27 for 259 and one touchdown. Talbert had five catches for 63 and one touchdown.

The Crusaders will be back in action next Saturday as they host Charleston Southern at Younts Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
