TIGERVILLE, SC- It is Homecoming 2006 at North Greenville University, and the theme all week on the Tigerville, SC campus was "The Amazing Race." At Younts Stadium, the Crusaders raced for 528 yards of total offense in a 52-6 victory over visisting Chowan University.
North Greenville was led by two sophomore running backs. Matt Moore rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns on just 10 carries, while fellow sophomore Rashad Cummings gained 92 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns.
Eric Moeller completed 13 of 21 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Dobbins led a talented Crusader receiving corps with 5 receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown. Travis Talbert and Jarvis Garrett each made 3 receptions with Talbert scoring a touchdown.
Defensively, the Crusaders were led by linebacker Derek White. White recorded six solo tackles and five assisted tackles. Andre Bernardi, Rashaun Johnson, and Doug Wilson each recorded 7 total tackles. The Crusaders picked off three Chowan passes. Josh Williams, Tyrell Davis, and Derrick Miller made the interceptions for North Greenville.
Quarterback Randy Gilbert led the Hawks with 164 yards on 16 of 28 passing. Gilbert also scored Chowan's lone touchdown on a 1-yard rush. James Fox caught 4 passes for 51 yards, while Sam Williams made three receptions for 63 yards. Spruce Lee led the Chowan rushing attack with 51 yards on 9 carries.
Defensively for the Hawks, Matt Virgil and Jecol Edwards each recorded six solo tackles and 2 assisted tackles to lead the team.
North Greenville struck first on their opening possession as Adrian Escalona split the uprights on a 41-yard field goal attempt to give the Crusaders an early 3-0 lead.
NGU scored once more in the first quarter as Moeller found Dobbins for a 59-yard touchdown strike after a beautiful fake-handoff to the running back. Chowan's defense and half of Younts Stadium thought Cummings had the ball, leaving Dobbins wide open and allowing him to walk into the end zone. Escalona's PAT gave NGU a 10-0 advantage.
Cummings scored the first of his two touchdowns at the 13:44 mark in the second quarter on a 7-yard run to cap an 11-play, 82-yard drive. Escalona made the PAT and North Greenville took a 17-0 lead.
Moore matched Cummings' touchdown at the 9:27 mark on a 14-yard dash to cap a 5-play, 70-yard drive. Escalona's PAT made the score 24-0.
Talbert wrapped up the scoring for the first half when he caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Moeller with just over a minute to play in the second quarter. Escalona's PAT gave NGU a 31-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, North Greenville's backfield Dynamic Duo of Moore and Cummings would score all three of the Crusaders' touchdowns. Moore scored on the third play of the half on a 69-yard run off of a toss sweep around the right end. Cummings capped a 10-play, 64-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown rush with 7:38 remaining in the third quarter.
Gilbert got the Hawks on the board at the 13:5 mark in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard rush. The Hawks drove 84 yards in 17 plays to score the touchdown. The two-point converstion failed.
Moore rounded out the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown run with 10:27 remaining in the ballgame. Escalona added his seventh PAT of the game to make the score its final of 52-6.
North Greenville improves to 6-2 on the season, while Chowan falls to 0-7. The Crusaders are back in action next Saturday night as they play host to Jacksonville University under the lights at Younts Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
