Crusaders post a double-nickel in shutout win at Brevard
RB Rashad Cummings rushed for 150 yards and 3 TDs

BREVARD, NC- North Greenville University scored early and often and the Crusader defense posted its first shutout of the season as the Crusaders defeated Brevard College 55-0 in NCAA Division II action Saturday afternoon. North Greenville amassed 549 yards of total offense while holding the Tornados to 108 yards.

Rashad Cummings led all rushers with 150 yards and three touchdowns. Matt Moore added 87 yards and a touchdown. QB Eric Moeller completed 16 of 18 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown pass. Three Crusader receivers caught four passes. Travis NeeSmith caught four for 63 yards. Jarvis Garrett caught four for 52 yards and a touchdown. Travis Talbert extended his consecutive-game reception streak to 17 with four catches for 41 yards.

Andre Bernardi led the Crusader defense with seven total tackles, one sack, and two tackles for a loss. Josh Johnson and Donovan Davis each recorded four solo tackles. Doug Wilson made one interception for the Crusaders.

Tyrone Arrington led the Tornados with 56 yards on 14 carries. Colby McCoy completed three of nine passes to lead Brevard. Travis Flynn led the all tacklers with nine total tackles for the Tornados.

The Crusaders scored on their first five possession as they took a 35-0 halftime lead. Cummings dashed in the end zone from three yards out to get NGU on the scoreboard first, capping an 8-play, 64-yard drive. Adrian Escalona added the PAT to give NGU an early 7-0 lead.

For North Greenville’s next touchdown the Crusaders dabbled in a little trickery as they entered defensive lineman Josh Johnson into the running back position. Johnson came out of the backfield into the end zone where Moeller found him for his first passing touchdown of the day. Escalona’s PAT made the score 14-0.

The Crusader rushing attack scored the next three touchdowns. Tim Brown ran for a 2-yard touchdown with 3:52 remaining in the first quarter. Next, Moore took the ball seven yards for the score at the 13:57 mark in the second quarter. Cummings added his second touchdown of the day with 7:40 remaining in the first half to give North Greenville its halftime lead of 35-0. Escalona added the PAT on all three touchdowns.

The Crusader defense held Brevard to a three and out to begin the second half. On the ensuing possession, NGU went 72 yards in four plays for the score, capped by a 36-yard run by Cummings for his third touchdown of the day. Stephen Lane added the PAT to give NGU 4-0 advantage.

Greg Woerner entered the game at quarterback in the third quarter. Woerner threw his first touchdown pass of the season with 14:05 remaining in the game when he found Jarvis Garrett for a 7-yard strike. The Tornados blocked the PAT attempt. On North Greenville’s next possession, Woerner ran 23 yards on a quarterback keeper for the final touchdown of the game. Lane’s kick made the score its final of 55-0.

North Greenville improves to 4-2. Bravard falls to 0-6. The Crusaders will travel to Kentucky Wesleyan next Saturday. Kickoff is set for noon.
