Michael Giacone was drafted in the 28th round by the New York Yankees as the 855th overall pick earlier this afternoon. The Southeast All-Region pitcher is the second Crusader to be selected in this year's MLB Draft.
In his one season with the Crusaders, Giacone was one of two aces on the team as both he and fellow starting pitcher Tucker Burgess concluded the 2019 season with very similar statistics, including an identical ERA of 2.16. In 83.1 innings pitched, Giacone allowed just 54 hits and 27 walks while recording 113 strikeouts. He was credited with 10 wins and just 1 loss for the year.
As a junior, Giacone has the option to return to North Greenville for his senior year. Should Giacone choose to sign with the Yankees, he will have an opportunity to return to the state as the Charleston Riverdogs are a Class A affiliate of the Yankees.
